Not only did we reduce development, operation and product costs pertaining to our information system, but we also improved its sustainability.Steeve Pardin, Operating System Support Manager
Founded in 1989, Mediaserv is a major player in the telecommunications market in the French overseas departments and offers telephone, Internet and television services in Guadeloupe, Saint-Martin-Saint-Barthélemy, Martinique, Guyana and Reunion, for both individuals and companies alike (access to high speed Internet, pre-selection, site interconnection network, website hosting and servers). With about 120 employees earning a revenue of more than 60 million euros, the company was acquired in 2014 by Canal + Overseas Group. Today, it has 100,000 customers.
Automate customer processes
Like most telecommunications operators around the globe, Mediaserv launched a vast business intelligence project in 2011, with the goal of improving the knowledge of its customers and refining its own network and information system. The company proceeded with an exhaustive market analysis to equip its Data Warehouse with a solution capable of automating data movement and transformation tasks. Talend Data Integration grabbed its attention for two main reasons: first of all, Talend offered the responsive support and professional assistance that it sought to improve its agility and, second of all, because Talend has a well-known reputation in the world of telecommunications.
“While the BI project was not completed within the dedicated timeframe, in two years we developed multiple projects within the context of technical developments,” explains Steeve Pardin, Operating System Support Manager at Mediaserv. “We use the Talend solution to develop and maintain several functional applications: for example, to automate the subscription and unbundling processes linked to a customer order, to detect errors and control priority processing, or to prepare production, order monitoring or information system status follow-up reports. Beforehand, to achieve this we used Perl or batch scripts, but their reliability left something to desire, and their maintenance and updating proved to be increasingly difficult each day.”
Modernizing the information system
Meanwhile, Mediaserv continually seeks to streamline its operations and accelerate its processing time, especially with respect to the processes that directly concern customers. Today, every brick of its information system – developed in-house – interacts via a mediation system – also developed in-house – built on a service-oriented architecture model. As part of the operator’s modernization strategy, Talend's mission is to improve the interface between the different bricks through the sharing of a single interface based on an ESB (Enterprise Service Bus) associated with a BPM (Business Process Management) solution. The goal is to move from an asynchronous architecture (based on exchanging XML files) to a more modern and agile, nearly real-time architecture. The information system, originally developed to manage approximately 100,000 customers, must accommodate between 200,000 and 300,000 customer accounts. The evaluation of the Talend ESB solution is also underway at Mediaserv, who is also interested in data consistency and wants to verify if the services provided to customers meet the corresponding service levels.
“Today, thanks to a well-controlled development of skills, Mediaserv developers use Talend Data Integration in many projects. Rather than developing web services or scripts, they centralize the creation of integration tasks via the Talend administrative console and can therefore easily control their operation. We now have a much better monitoring of data quality and the operation of our applications,” continues Steeve Pardin. “Talend seamlessly integrates with our information system and may even advantageously replace some applications.”
Data security and cost reduction
Data security and production speed are among the main benefits offered by Talend, as highlighted by Mediaserv. “Talend offers the tools necessary to monitor the proper functioning of our jobs: via the administration console, we are able to monitor data flows and make sure that data efficiently passes through the different bricks of the information system,” remarks Steeve Pardin. “In addition, thanks to the wealth of graphic components and the user-friendliness of the solution, we recorded significant gains in productivity and reliability in terms of development. Data improvement is also fast and simple.”
Mediaserv now considers Talend a strategic brick of its information system. “The solution is crucial to implement all the improvements needed to modernize our information system. While we chose to develop it in-house, at the time it was due to cost reasons, but also speed (it was developed in 18 months). With our agility, we quickly captured market share. 8 years later, aside from cost control, we focus primarily on operating and production issues. Our priority is to improve our information system to enable it to effectively manage a volume of customers that is two to three times larger,” adds Steeve Pardin.
Lastly, Mediaserv appreciates the sustainability of the system. “Not only did we reduce development, operation and product costs pertaining to our information system, but we also improved its sustainability: we are currently quickly recovering developments made in the past, and new developments that we plan with the integration of an ESB-BPM solution will further reinforce this sustainability. In a nutshell, we are progressively securing our growth,” concludes Steeve Pardin. “None of this would have been possible without Talend’s support, who accompanied us on a daily basis in learning how to use and operate the solution. Support is responsive, attentive and really understands our needs. It offers excellent tips to optimize use. Ultimately, Talend is helping us evolve to a more modern and agile architecture, which perfectly corresponds to our mission of supporting operational activities.”
