The Majority of Businesses Surveyed are Failing to Comply with GDPR, According to New Talend Research

70% of companies surveyed couldn’t fulfill data access and portability requests within the GDPR-specified one-month time limit Redwood City, CA - September 13, 2018 - Some 70% of surveyed businesses worldwide failed to address requests made from individuals seeking to obtain a copy of their personal data as required by GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) within the one-month time limit set out in the regulations, reveals new research from Talend, a global leader in cloud data integration solutions. The research is based on personal data requests made to 103 companies based or operating in Europe across industries including retail, media, technology, public sector, finance, and travel. Conducted between June 1 and September 3, 2018, Talend assessed responses to GDPR Article 15 (“Right of access by the data subject”) and Article 20 (“Right to data portability”) requests, monitoring areas including GDPR references in privacy policies, and the speed and completeness of responses. “GDPR requires insight into company data and its governance,” said Penny Jones, Research Director at 451 Research.  “Recent research, including that done by Talend and separate reports by 451 Research, has found that while many organizations understand the importance of GDPR, many are still not taking their data seriously in terms of the technologies and processes they have in place. As a result, many businesses are falling short of their GDPR obligations. They can lack the proper methods for storing, organizing or retrieving data in line with the regulation’s requirements.” “GDPR presents an opportunity to engage with customers and build loyalty. It’s vital for businesses in the digital era to have a 360-degree view of customers,” said Jean-Michel Franco, Senior Director of Data Governance Products at Talend. “Businesses must ensure that data is consolidated and stored in a transparent and shareable way. What’s more, GDPR’s one-month time limit should be viewed as an absolute deadline rather than a target. Our research shows that it is possible for some brands to respond within a day, suggesting that these brands understand fast response times will help boost customer trust.” Major findings from the research include: GDPR compliance is higher outside of Europe Just 35% of Europe-based companies polled provided data. This includes companies headquartered in the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Sweden, and Italy. However, at 50%, the compliance rate was slightly higher for non-European companies, suggesting that businesses outside of Europe are taking a slightly more proactive approach to GDPR. Retail firms had lowest response rate A worrying 76% of retail companies polled failed to respond, while the best performing industry, Financial Services, still only managed a 50% success rate. When drilling down in the results, the research suggests that businesses that started out offline, and those that are hindered by legacy systems, may find GDPR compliance more challenging. Significantly different response times between industries The vast majority (65%) of GDPR compliant companies took more than ten days to respond and the overall average response time was 21 days. For some, however, the response was much quicker. Of those who responded within the time limit (22% of companies) – primarily streaming services, mobile banking, and technology businesses – replied within just one day, suggesting that digital service companies are more agile when it comes to GDPR compliance. More benchmark results will be shared by Franco during his presentation today at the Strata Data Conference in New York City. Approaches to help manage technologies and processes for GDPR are explained here.   About the Research Talend conducted market research to assess companies’ ability to comply with the new GDPR regulation. The research involved 103 GDPR-relevant companies across the globe (EU companies [70%] or companies based in NORAM [19%] or APAC [11%] that conduct business in Europe) from a range of industries (retail, media, technology, utilities & telecommunications, public sector, finance, and travel, transportation & hospitality. The analysis involved the following: Assessing whether companies had updated their privacy policies to account for GDPR Researching whether companies had dedicated ways for consumers to request GDPR data (i.e., the personal information the company has on them) Requesting GDPR data and assessing how quickly and thoroughly companies comply Requesting GDPR data in a way that may be directly accessed and reused by the individual (data portability)

Talend Unveils Bulk Data Uploader to Enable Large-Scale, Real-Time Analytics on Microsoft Azure SQL Data Warehouse

Organizations Can Now Give Employees Access to Analytics in the Cloud at Low-cost without the Need for Source System Migration Redwood City, CA - August 16, 2018 - Talend, a global leader in cloud integration solutions, unveiled a new bulk data uploader for Microsoft Azure SQL Data Warehouse, which helps empower thousands of users across an organization with a fast, flexible and secure cloud data warehouse. Available in its recently announced Talend Cloud Summer ’18, the connector helps rapidly ingest massive data volumes to Azure SQL Data Warehouse, so customers can reap the performance and scalability benefits of the cloud without needing to move source systems. Talend also supports Azure SQL Data Warehouse orchestration and management. “Data warehousing is really about bringing massive amounts of diverse data into one definitive, trusted source for analytics and reporting that is accessible across an organization. In this increasingly cloud-centric, on-demand world, businesses are expecting to perform fast, large-scale analytics at a fraction of the cost and resources required by traditional data warehouses,” said Rob Cornell, Head of Technology Alliances, Talend. “We’re pleased to continue our support of Microsoft Azure SQL Data Warehouse with our new connector that helps customers accelerate and scale the ingestion, management, orchestration, and governance of data in the cloud, making real-time business analytics a reality.” Forrester Research indicates the market for big data services in the cloud will grow by almost 40 percent annually through 2021. Additionally, a recent Forrester survey found organizations that moved to Azure SQL Data Warehouse saw significant increases in performance, with streamlined data warehouse management, while lowering their costs. Azure SQL Data Warehouse is a cloud analytics platform that separates storage and compute to give unique flexibility in deploying a solution for a user’s specific business requirements. This also allows users to stop and start job execution while keeping data storage persistent. As a result, the solution ensures customers pay only for compute time and resources used. The recently released Compute Optimized Gen2 tier also adds a layer of intelligent, adaptive data caching using fast, non-volatile SSDs, which increases query performance up to five times compared to the previous generation, with up to four times the number of concurrent queries. Add to that mix the new Talend Data Fabric bulk data uploader, and customers get a scalable solution for performing high-speed analytics on current data without the cloud migration headache. At its recent Build conference, Microsoft demonstrated the Compute Optimized Gen2 tier’s ability to run complex queries on 150 billion rows of data—reflecting 70 years of U.S. water supply, demand and weather information—with results achieved in seconds. Talend’s new bulk data uploader for the Microsoft Azure SQL Data warehouse Gen2 helps organizations: Load data into an Azure SQL Data Warehouse table from either Azure Blob Storage or Azure Data Lake Store Commit a global transaction in one go rather than on every row or every batch; therefore, providing gains in performance Cancel the committed transaction in the Azure SQL Data Warehouse to prevent partial transactions if an error occurs Execute SQL queries on an Azure SQL Data Warehouse “With its comprehensive data integration and management capabilities, plus its robust support for Azure data services, Talend is an essential Microsoft partner,” said Bharat Sandhu, Director, Analytics & AI, Microsoft. “The impressive performance and compelling economics of combining our Azure SQL Data Warehouse with Talend’s fast data uploader, represents a powerful solution for any organization looking to leverage the power of the cloud to perform business analytics at scale.” For more information on Talend’s new bulk data uploader and how it works with Microsoft’s Azure SQL Data Warehouse visit https://bit.ly/2nIbYki. They become a critical component of modern information infrastructure. They support both traditional and new data integration patterns in order to capitalize on market demand. Leaders have significant mind share in the market, and resources skilled in their tools are readily available. These vendors recognize the need for new and emerging market demands — often providing new functional capabilities in their products ahead of demand, and by identifying new types of business problem to which data integration tools can bring significant value. Examples of deployments that span multiple projects and types of use case are common among Leaders' customers. Leaders have an established market presence, significant size and a multinational presence — either directly or through a parent company.” [1] “We’re proud to offer the only open source-based, unified platform that is purpose-built for modern cloud and big data use cases,” said Mike Tuchen, CEO, Talend. “Talend is uniquely positioned to help companies embrace new market innovations and government regulations in order to turn data into a competitive strength. We believe that our consecutive position as a Leader in the Magic Quadrant reinforces our technical strength and go-to-market strategy.” Talend delivers a single platform for data integration across public, hybrid, and private cloud, as well as on-premises environments, and facilitates greater collaboration between IT and business teams.
