It’s about time to simplify the whole license game

Forrester Research has recently published a study on the understanding that users have of licensing and pricing policies of software vendors.  Matt Asay actually posted a very interesting piece on this topic.

For this study, the Cambridge, Mass. analyst firm, under the leadership of R. “Ray” Wang, has surveyed over 200 enterprise IT professionals and conducted about 20 follow-on interviews.

The results are tough on proprietary software vendors:

“According to these users, software licensing and pricing continues to be marred by complexity, soaring maintenance costs, and a lack of flexibility and alignment with business goals.”

Maintenance costs reach up to 26% of the TCO, when enterprises wished it would not exceed 16%.

This survey highlights the fact that vendors leverage this complexity to prevent any comparison with their competitors.  The decrease in license costs is only used to hide the rise of maintenance costs.  As an illustration, the price list of a well known vendor is over 100 pages long, and you don’t account for terms & conditions there…

Yet another validation of our model!  The vast majority of our clients mention the simplicity of the licensing model as one of the major advantages of Talend’s open source solutions.  When we launched Talend On Demand last May, it was met by enthusiasm from the community – SaaS is another key simplifying factor.  We also announced recently offers specifically targeting Sunopsis’ users and Genio’s users in order to help users who are faced with post-merger uncertainty find an affordable and high performance alternative.

Transparency is one of the most important assets open source brings the table.

From SugarCon in San Jose

This week is SugarCon, SugarCRM’s users and developers conference in San Jose, CA. A pretty amazing event that the Sugar folks have pulled together - 300 attendees gathered for 3 days at the Dolce Hayes Mansion to hear from SugarCRM, their partners and an impressive panel of keynote speakers: Jonathan Schwartz, Larry Augustine, Daniel Lyons (the Fake Steve Jobs), Paul Greenberg, etc.

vp_sugarcon.jpgAs a technology and business partner of SugarCRM, Talend is sponsoring this conference. We presented two sessions: Vincent described how we used our own data integration technology to integrate our own instance of SugarCRM (yes, we even use it internally) with our other mission critical systems. And I was on stage yesterday to present why open source data integration is a must have in any SugarCRM deployment.

Among the highlights, in no specific order:

  • Lots of interest from SugarCRM customers and professional services people for data integration.John Roberts’ opening keynote started with a guitar solo from Martin Schneider, SugarCRM’s Sr Manager of Product Marketing - to show that SugarCRM is not your typical software vendor
  • keynote_sugarcon.jpg
  • Still in this keynote, John showed a screenshot of SugarExchange showing one of the most popular projects on it: Talend Open Studio (see photo on the right)
  • The special event at the Testarossa Winery in Los Gatos featured a live band of SugarCRM employees - including Martin Schneider and John Roberts. Not enough light for the iPhone camera unfortunately.

The event is closing at midday today, so far it’s been a very worthwhile conference for us. Our partnership with SugarCRM is definitely a great one for all the parties - SugarCRM, Talend, and our joint customers.

Bertrand on TV, video podcasts from Solutions Linux

If you can understand French, you will certainly enjoy these three videos from Solutions Linux:

In addition, the multiple announcements we did at Solutions Linux generated lots of interesting coverage. I won’t list them all here since many are in French, but all of this testifies to the phenomenal growth and relevancy of open source in general, and especially business open source.
