Interoperability is the #1 issue for customers

The OSA (Open Solutions Alliance), whose goal is to define and promote solutions, tools, frameworks and best practices for facilitating the deployment and integration of open applications in the enterprise, has just published the findings collected from over 100 attendees at 5 customer forums ran in the US and Europe (you can download the summary report here).

For these attendees, interoperability of open source solutions is the most important need.  This interoperability offers them a way out of the “all Microsoft†approach, especially by leveraging technology standards.

The results from this survey show that interoperability issues faced by SMB range from authentication, data integration and synchronization, user interfaces, portals, portability and content integration.  Large companies are more focused on integrating and orchestrating business processes, managing execution and integrating legacy applications.  Finally, they are all worried about supporting and managing applications from multiple providers.

In parallel, enterprises say they tend to favor open source solutions, because they offer more integration options and more features.  With more and more frequent M&A, open source solutions appear more viable.

Beyond interoperability, user organizations are also concerned by support, security, license management, services and training when it relates to Open Source solutions.

The OSA will leverage these conclusions to reinforce its actions in 2008.  Not only will the consortium continue its important evangelizing mission toward enterprises, but it will also target systems integrators and software vendors to help them to reinforce the interoperability of their offerings.  As a founding member of the OSA, Talend will of course be part of these efforts, but will also work on reinforcing the interoperability of its solutions, by working actively with its partners.  This is how we will be able to grow our installed user base in always more numerous organizations and to make their life always easier.  And this is yet another example of how open source communities meet the needs of their users, thanks to permanent listening and a strategy driven by user satisfaction.

Computerworld case study: ETAI avoids data traffic jam with open source

logo_computerworld.jpgLeading IT publication Computerworld published today a nice piece featuring Talend’s customer ETAI: ETAI avoids data traffic jam with open source. Computerworld editor Todd Weiss, who had been following Talend for a little while, interviewed Philippe Bobo, director of software and information systems at ETAI to find out how he was integrating many heterogeneous sources to build his auto parts catalog and service manual, which is revised 100 times per year.

A few interesting nuggets from this article:

- “ETAI tested products from Talend and three other vendors last January, settling on Talend after five weeks of trials. ETAI went with Talend because its application uses standard programming languages, offers good performance and is much faster than ETAI’s legacy software.”

- “Talend Open Studio also allows ETAI to automate the 15 labor-intensive steps needed to integrate the various databases, dramatically streamlining the process.”

- “The support from Talend is very good. We had some times when we were blocked, when we were missing a needed component and they helped create the component. I’m very happy with it.”

The Next Disruptive IT Influence

A recently published study on Open Source once again confirms what I have been saying over and over again: Open Source solutions get more and more entrenched in organizations.  And this isn’t going to stop any time soon…

Saugatuck Technology, an analyst firm specialized in new technologies, has published a report on Open Source: Open Source Software: The Next Disruptive IT Influence.  Among the numerous conclusions of this study, the analyst firm confirms that by 2010, Open Source applications will account for more than 50% of the IT systems for a third of organizations.  More importantly, more than half of the people who were polled said that Open Source solutions bring them a key competitive advantage.

Saugatuck explains these numbers by arguing that after 10 years during which Open Source solutions were only used by early adopters, they now enter a maturity phase, and get generally adopted by enterprises.  These enterprises include now Open Source in their IT strategy: 25% of them always consider Open Source when choosing a new system, and 40% do so frequently.  From 10% today, the “market share” of Open Source will climb to 20% over the course of the next three years.

Furthermore, as highlighted by Saugatuck, users will be able to rely more and more on Open Source components, without knowing it, by using on-demand solutions (SaaS) which often leverage the openness, performance and reliability of our solutions.

Seminar in the Bay Area

img_0150.jpgOn Thursday Talend sponsored a seminar in the San Francisco Bay Area featuring Bill Inmon, “the Father of Data Warehousing”. Bill delivered an interesting speech on the evolution of IT architectures. This was followed by a presentation on the economics of data integration, and how Open Source changes the story. We concluded the morning with a presentation and demonstration of Talend Integration Suite, our enterprise data integration solution.

img_0161.jpgimg_0153.jpgFor the venue, we had selected the Hiller Aviation Museum in San Carlos. If you have ever driven on Route 101, you have certainly noticed it - on the right hand side of the highway when going North toward San Francisco, with its tall marquee. The museum has a great collection of vintage aircrafts and helicopters, and even the front section of a real 747 with its cockpit and 1st class cabin! Most attendees told us they had always wanted to visit the museum but had never had the opportunity to do it.

Speaking of attendees, we got a good sample of representative of the area’s corporations, as well as several partners. They all provided good feedback. This was overall a very positive event.
