Most Enterprises Don’t Trust Their Data, According to New Talend Survey

Only 31% of Data Specialists Have a High Level of Confidence in their Organizations' ability to Deliver Trusted Data at Speed Redwood City, CA - July 11, 2019 - Less than one third (31%) of data specialists, including data analysts, data scientists and data quality managers, are fully confident in their ability to deliver trusted data at speed throughout their organization, reveals a new global survey from Talend, a global leader in cloud data integration and data integrity. In the Talend commissioned survey conducted by Opinion Matters, 763 data professionals (executives and operational data workers) around the globe were queried to understand confidence levels in their organizations' ability to deal with two significant simultaneous challenges: 1) Capturing, processing, and democratizing data at speed; and 2) ensuring the reliability and integrity of the information in the data streams shared by the organization. Trust Perception Gap between Management and Operations According to the survey, there is a significant gap in perceptions between senior IT management and mid-ranking data professionals (operational data workers), with the former substantially more confident in their organizations' abilities. "The different levels of confidence displayed by people at a management level and operational data workers are not surprising, but it is definitely worrying," said Ciaran Dynes, Senior VP of Products at Talend. "What we see today is that organizations are struggling to deliver trusted data when they need to deliver it and they are also struggling to gain credibility internally, in the market and with customers. Organizations need to build a bridge between IT and data workers - responsible for delivering at speed - and the people in charge of building and safeguarding trust, something which is often led at an executive level. Although generating trust may come from the top, the ability to deliver trusted data at speed requires the commitment of every data specialist within an organization as well as cultural alignment. This usually relies on the work of data champions, who have the skills to lead cultural change in data handling and processes as well." Major findings from the survey, highlighting three significant gaps - trust, speed and execution - include: Excellence of speed and integrity control: The Leaders and the others Digital transformation is often about speed: accelerating time to market, driving business insights or actions in real time, or delivering personalized customer experiences. When organizations succeed in combining speed with integrity, they can deliver intelligent and trusted data in everything they do.  However, despite the importance of ensuring speed and trust in data, a mere 11% of respondents consider that their businesses have reached excellence in both speed and integrity. A significant difference between between management and operational workers Overall, people close to data (data workers) are less confident in their organizations' abilities to trust in their own data, with only 31% showing high levels of confidence. By contrast, 46% of respondents at a management level are confident in the ability of their organizations to deliver trusted data at speed. For regulatory compliance, one of the key criteria to evaluate trust, 52% of respondents at a management level claim to be very optimistic when it comes to having achieved compliance with data regulations, while the rate falls to 39% among the operational data workers - who may be in charge of making the practical changes to deliver compliance. Data quality confidence remains low The survey shows that only 38% of respondents believe their organizations excel in controlling data quality. Less than one in three (29%) operational data workers are confident their companies’ data is always accurate and up-to-date.  360-degree real-time data integration is still a challenge Having access to real-time or at least timely data accelerates changes and helps organizations to make faster, more reliable strategic business decisions, which lead to better outcomes. According to the survey, only 34% of operational data workers believe in their organizations' capability to succeed in a 360-degree real-time data integration process whereas respondents at a management level again feel more confident (46%) in this regard. "We’ve entered the era of the information economy, where data has become the most critical asset for every single organization," continues Dynes. "Data-driven strategies are imperative for success in any industry. To support business objectives such as revenue growth, profitability, and customer satisfaction, organizations require trusted data which can be delivered when it is needed and relied upon to drive critical business insights. Trust in data has to be paramount because without trusted data there can be no confidence in business decisions, and at that point stakeholder and customer trust will quickly evaporate too." For more results, further analysis and practical guidance on enhancing trust in data and speed of access, the Talend Data Trust Readiness report can be found here. It includes detailed results and an analysis of the different criteria that were used to assess organizations' data trust and speed of access. Like this story? This global study queried a minimum of 150 professionals in each regional area: the UK, France, Germany, the US, and across APAC. The 763 data professionals surveyed work for companies employing more than 500 people. The aim of this research was to get a sense of data professionals’ confidence in the ability of their organization to deal with speed and trust, according to 10 capabilities: Trust Capabilities Master data quality with trustworthy, complete and up-to-date data assets Get control over all the organization’s data and prevent shadow IT Create a single source of trusted data and foster data ownership Empower organizations with modern tools and systems to manage and monitor the data Enforce regulatory compliance with good data Speed Capabilities Perform real-time data integration to meet real business needs Get instant access to data whenever it is needed Enable access to and use of self-service applications Perform faster root cause analysis thanks to data lineage Accelerate data delivery to third party applications and teams through APIs

Talend Helps Branch of French Armed Forces Use Data to Simplify Investigations, Protect National Security and Improve Operations and Logistics

Enables Automated, Real-Time Data Processing and the Screening of One Million Identities Per Month to Strengthen French National Security Redwood City, CA and Suresnes, France - July 9, 2019 - Talend, a global leader in cloud data integration and data integrity, announced today that the Gendarmerie Nationale, a branch of the French Armed Forces that is tasked with ensuring the peace and safety of French citizens and protecting their property, uses Talend to ensure that all inter-application data exchanges in its interface and referential data system. With Talend, the Gendarmerie Nationale integrates data from hundreds of applications and dozens of files into a single system for automatic and simultaneous analysis in real-time. France’s Ministry of the Interior tasked the Gendarmerie Nationale to further strengthen the automated processing of personal data in the context of the fight against terrorism. The agency wanted to create a solution to cross-reference security information that had previously been stored in independent files. Called ACCReD (Automation of Centralized Consultation of Data Information), this police system allows the automatic and simultaneous analysis of files, in particular, those of wanted persons; people categorized under the S card (individuals considered threats to national security); and government investigations related to public security, such as the monitoring of authorizations to access nuclear or vitally important facilities. "Our initial difficulty was that all our databases were independent. To access the information, it was necessary to consult them one by one and sometimes to type the same last and first name 4 to 5 times to access the information, which took an infinite amount of time," said Commander Christophe Tedesco, Section Chief at the Technology Department and Homeland Security Information Systems (STSISI) of the Gendarmerie Nationale. "We have therefore set up an interface and referential system and ensure inter-application exchanges using Talend Data Fabric. Talend has become the conductor of all exchanges between our security files and a critical element of our information system. Today, there is not a single application of the Gendarmerie and the Police that does not consume or produce data without going through Talend.” Today, the system can analyze more than one million identities screened per month compared to 300,000 requests per year at the beginning of the project. This growth is due to the fact that ACCReD has opened up to companies (public transport operator, transporter, nuclear, etc.) who must ensure that their employees are not at risk. Police officer mobility applications also benefit from the system. Today, during a roadside check, an agent enters an identity and/or a license plate and chooses the verifications to be made. A synthesis usually takes 8 to 10 seconds. It is exactly the same principle that allows automated border controls at French airports between 1 and 20 seconds. The Border Police application consults, again via the system powered by Talend, the file of wanted persons in real-time. This automated access of all security data is highly sensitive. On the recommendations of the French data protection authority, a short list of authorized users has been established by the government to access the intelligence banks. Every night, Talend builds, from various data sources, an HR pivot repository that takes into account elements such as transfers or changes of assignments, allowing consultation to be restricted to authorized persons only. Ultimately, a person rather than the system decides who is qualified to access the data. And the overall results are subject to the approval of the Officers of the Judicial Police (OPJ). “We have been working with Talend for more than a decade on our internal applications. Talend has a dynamic attitude and a genuine willingness to move the product forward,” commented Tedesco. “The company is continually keeping pace with technology developments. When we migrated to SAP HANA, we only needed to change the Talend connector. It was available, practical, and easy to use.” "In critical situations, it is crucial that the Gendarmerie Nationale, but also the Police and Justice authorities, are able to base their investigations on reliable data that is accessible in real time," said Ciaran Dynes, Senior Vice President of Products at Talend. "We are extremely proud to be able to contribute and innovate in the interest of public safety.” Additional information on how the Gendarmerie Nationale is using Talend can be found here. Talend Cloud Helps Streamline Kent State University’s Admissions Process

Enables speed and trust for analyzing application data in a hybrid cloud environment Redwood City, CA - June 18, 2019 - Talend, a global leader in cloud integration and data integrity, today announced that Kent State University is using Talend Cloud to simplify its admissions process. Combining data integration, data stewardship, and application integration capabilities from Talend on Amazon Web Services (AWS), Kent State is able to integrate ERP with CRM and other SaaS systems, streamline the admissions process, and shorten development time. “Talend is a platform that helps us integrate multiple systems on-premises and in the cloud, put structure around data movement, and make data work for us,” said John Rathje, Kent State's vice president for information technology and CIO. “We use it to manage and understand data, and as a framework for capabilities like deploying a more structured approach to reporting and analytics.” Using the cloud to streamline the admissions process During the graduate and international student admissions process, Kent State receives data such as standardized test scores and lists of candidates from several sources. This influx of data left Kent State with many point-to-point integrations among different systems, both on-premises and in the cloud. To simplify the application and admissions process, Kent State needed to organize and integrate a number of data sources. To do this, the university needed to transition to a cloud-based environment and integrate all systems receiving application data. In working with Talend, Kent State has integrated more than 60 systems, streamlined the processing of more than 6,000 graduate school applications, shortened development time with reusable components, and leveraged Remote Engines to access cloud and on-premises data. The university was able to, for example, integrate two major systems, CollegeNET CRM and Banner ERP. This integration prevents employees from manually entering the same information twice and syncs data nightly so changes in Banner are replicated in CollegeNET. Additionally, faulty data is caught early as the data stewardship capabilities in Talend Cloud eliminate the need for manually changing data in Banner, saving up to 20 minutes in admissions staff time per applicant.  “With high competition among universities for qualified students, consistent messages are critical to recruiting success,” said Ciaran Dynes, SVP of Products at Talend. “Talend is happy to provide Kent State with integrated, high-quality data that enables them to identify and communicate with students more effectively during the recruiting process.” Additional information on how Kent State is using Talend can be found here. For more information on other innovative customer use cases and Talend’s entire portfolio of solutions, visit www.talend.com.
