Talend Launches the First Targeted Offering for Migration of Data Integration Processes

Talend provides Genio's users with a new alternative to preserve their integration architecture

SURESNES, France - September 17, 2007 - Talend, the first open source data integration vendor, announced today the availability of its offering for the migration of data integration processes targeted for Genio users. The migration to Talend Open Studio reduces integration costs and preserves the investments made by Genio users.

Genio, an ETL product, was developed in the late 90s by Leonard's Logic, a French vendor acquired by Hummingbird in 1999 - which was itself absorbed by Open Text in 2006. Following this latest acquisition, several user companies (600 in total according to some sources, among which 300 are based in France) have expressed concerns regarding their integration architecture. Indeed Open Text, which has publicly claimed to be "100% focused on the ECM [Enterprise Content Management] market", doesn't plan to invest in new Business Intelligence tools, and those currently in its portfolio are been used for content management.

"When migrating to a new system, companies using obsolete tools like Genio encounter a major hurdle: the need to re-develop their whole integration architecture," explained Yves de Montcheuil, VP of Marketing at Talend. "This kind of project represents a significant workload and can be very difficult to implement without a proper tool, especially without some project documentation or specifications of existing developments."

Talend offers a structured and tooled migration process based on the following steps:

  • Inventory of the Genio repository
  • Projects and dependencies cartography
  • Measure of key indicators
  • Impact analysis
  • Automation of the migration preparatory work

Like any migration project, this process cannot automate 100% of the tasks but it nevertheless substantially reduces the associated costs and risks. Talend's migration offering allows to win in reliability and to accelerate the migration time, thanks to the automation of most of the tasks.

"We have already performed 3 migrations" declared François Méro, General Manager for Europe at Talend. "In those 3 cases the time saved in comparison to a manual migration was between 50% and 70%. The users of Talend Open Studio also benefit from consequent substantial performance gains, and a clear productivity improvement in the implementation of new integration processes. Moreover they now have access to the power of the Open Source model: cost reductions, reactivity of the editor, an active community, the respect for industry standards, evolution capabilities, the product adaptability, performance, etc…"
