Talend Data Quality Migrates Legacy Data into GASTAR™

ENSYTE Partners with Talend to Migrate Legacy Data into its GASTAR™ Product and Integrate New Data with SAP ERP and SAP CMS

With Talend’s ability to drag and drop new data sources for migration, we were able to shave weeks or even months off the time we needed to complete the migration project.  The Talend Data Quality product helped us complete the project effectively and efficiently.

The Gas Industry’s Complex Supply Chain
The supply chain for natural gas is complex and requires clear business processes to optimize operations.  The major players in the natural gas arena include: exploration and production companies, pipeline operators, midstream service providers, local distribution companies, and retail outlets.  As natural gas production continues to grow at a rapid pace, these companies are leveraging software technology to build the infrastructures necessary to support their business.  From gas supply and production to transportation, distribution, and marketing; natural gas companies need systems that can alleviate the heavy burden of managing the enormous amounts of data streaming from each point along the supply chain.

About ENSYTE
ENSYTE Energy Software Int’l provides energy firms with the essential software applications needed for managing the oil and gas supply chain.  ENSYTE has over 30 years of experience developing and implementing oil and gas software solutions, which translates into a comprehensive understanding of the challenges facing energy companies today.  ENSYTE developed its natural gas software solution, GASTAR specifically to address the needs of the natural gas market.  The product manages transactions along the entire natural gas supply chain – “from wellhead to burner tip” – giving clients the power to leverage data across the organization into one streamlined business process.

Migrating Data from Legacy Systems into GASTAR
During a recent GASTAR implementation, the ENSYTE client required storage of critical data several thousand wells that had been acquired during the purchase of a subsidiary organization.  The information resided in legacy systems and would need to be migrated into the GASTAR product.

ENSYTE partnered with Open Source Business Consulting (OSBC) to evaluate several options for the migration of the legacy data.  According to OSBC’s Chief Technology Officer, Jeff Collins, the project scope grew significantly during initial evaluations as ENSYTE uncovered various data sources to include a legacy checkfile system, Excel and Access databases, and a risk management component to the system.  These sources would also need to be migrated into GASTAR with a rapid implementation timeline.

The team agreed to engage Talend Data Quality due to previous success utilizing the Talend tools for other implementation projects.  Without the use of Talend, the team would’ve had to hand code a migration path for each data source, quadrupling the time to complete the critical project.  According to Michael Smith, President of ENSYTE, “With Talend’s ability to drag and drop new data sources for migration, we were able to shave weeks or even months off the time we needed to complete the migration project.  The Talend Data Quality product helped us complete the project effectively and efficiently.”

Talend Enables Post Migration Integration with SAP ERP and SAP CMS
The next phase of the project was to build an integration path between the company’s SAP Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Customer Management System (CMS) components, into GASTAR.  Talend was also leveraged for this part of the project.  Kirk Ritchey, President at OSBC confirms, “Before Talend, this type of integration would’ve taken months and at a big cost.”

Today the team at ENSYTE is able to answer questions about their data quickly, and the internal client Users are able to look at the data they need to make strategic business decisions at any given time.  “We are still finding new and innovative ways of leveraging Talend to deliver value-added services for our clients.” continues Ritchey.

For a company like ENSYTE who had an aggressive timeline to migrate multiple data sources into a single repository, Talend Data Quality fit the bill.  Talend’s ability to save the ENSYTE team weeks of manual data migration in order to make their product as effective as possible is what made it truly valuable. Being able to add the second phase of data integration from the same product is exactly why companies like ENSYTE choose Talend.
