Talend MDM Technology
Enabling quick time to value with a complete MDM solution
Talend MDM provides the key functionalities across Data Integration, Data Quality, Master Data and Data Stewardship all through a single development environment, the Talend Studio. This unique approach allows you to install, implement and manage a single solution across all these key functional groups decreasing complexity and time to value for your MDM project.
The five key functional categories of Talend MDM include the Active Data Model, Domain Driven Integration, Master Data Quality, Data Stewardship and the Talend Studio. Each is described below. Further, a corresponding matrix delineates the differences between Community Edition and Enterprise Edition.
Talend's Active Data Model allows organizations to immediately model and master any data domain without a constraining data model and conditionally drive integration and synchronization with external systems to reduce system complexity and time to deploy. Talend MDM permits an iterative definition of the data model to gain alignment from business users and ensure adoption upon launch.
- Open XML-based data model - Talend MDM allows to model any data and is not restricted to a pre-defined data model. The Active Data Model allows to define entities, attributes, validations, access rights, translations and much more. The open XML based approach is naturally multi-domain.
- Import domain templates - Talend MDM allows to import a best practice domain model into the hub to get up and running quickly. The Talend Exchange community has best practice domain models available for vertical specific domains. Once imported a domain model can be customized easily for unique requirements.
- Basic data validations - the XML based approach uses annotations to perform basic validations such as field length or type and extends this to add validation against enumerated types and calculated values. For instance one could validate whether a string matches a regular expression or if a date is within a range. These validations are automatically present in published services and the web interface.
- Graphical modeling tool - Talend MDM provides an intuitive graphic interface for quick and easy creation of unique data models. Simple menus allow to set access rights, define foreign keys and even create a web based interface for the data.
- Multiple languages - MDM inherently supports multiple languages. Master data and its metadata can be provisioned by language and driven by security groups or through custom user control.
With Talend MDM, the master data drives interactions with external systems. The solution employs a unique event manager to drive when and where data is synchronized, augmented or distributed. A graphical tool provides over 400 proven components and connectors to build and deploy integration jobs with any application, database or system.
- Connectors and components - Talend MDM provides over 400 components to build custom integration jobs. These jobs enable the master data hub to consume or propagate data to any application, database or system in real time or batch.
- Data driven integration - Master data is the owner of its lifecycle and also drives when and how it is created or distributed to other systems. The solution employs a trigger based event manager that monitors changes and initiates actions for integration or workflow as defined by the data model.
- External system communication - Talend MDM allows to communicate with external systems in real time or batch.
- SOA manager/console - the SOA systems console provides overall system health status and insight into the status of deployed jobs and to identify concerns.
Talend MDM provides features that allow to validate, resolve, standardize, cleanse and augment master data. The solution delivers a robust data profiling tool. It packages native components for name and address standardization, and callouts to external standardization services are provided. Callouts to external source including lookups for hierarchies or some other reference codes can be performed based on specific data criteria.
- Data profiling - the profiling capabilities enables the assessment of the quality level any data as defined by a set of metrics and goals. They provide simple or advanced statistics to text string analysis, including summary data and statistical distributions of hub data.
- Data augmentation - make calls to external systems or databases to augment hub data with attributes from an reliable source such as hierarchy information or other reference data lookup/validation.
- Advanced data validations - with advanced validations one can calculate values based on attribute data and then propagate the data and validation routine to any associated services and the web based front end.
- Data standardization - components are provided that allow to make callouts to industry-standard data standardization services.
- Data cleansing - components are provided that allow to identify and remove duplicates, complete and correct values and properly format hub data.
The Talend MDM collaborative interface allows to search and author hub data and appropriate stewardship tools help manage the process of updating the data. The Ajax based interface is dynamically driven by Talend's Active Data Model. All validations found on the model instantiate themselves as validations on Web-based forms. Workflow process is easy to define and provides a strong set of tools for a team to collaborate on and create a trusted and reliable set of master data.
- Authoring and search tool - a complete, dynamic AJAX based interface allows to search, author and modify hub data. It provides an interface for data and workflow tasks to provide structure to data stewardship.
- Hierarchy management - Talend MDM provides the tools to inspect and modify master data hierarchies.
- Workflow and stewardship - workflow is defined and managed by the master data and workflow tasks such as approvals of data, etc. are assigned to users or groups of users. Configuration of workflow is accomplished using an intuitive graphical interface.
- Hub versioning - create a complete version of a hub to make modifications or deploy in a new environment. Also provided are tools to synchronize hub versions.
- Historical views - Talend MDM allows to view complete historical values and structure of master data within the hub. It also provides a journal of all hub events.
Talend Studio is an intuitive development environment based on Eclipse that allows to build and manage the data model, define integration jobs, administer data quality and create stewardship workflows to support the creation of master data all in a single interface. It also provides unique functions for creating versions of hub data and hierarchy management.
- Robust code generator - as with the complete Talend product line, behind the graphical interface is a powerful code generator. A hub can be deployed without any manual coding.
- Journal - complete history of all hub activity is recorded and accessible through an intuitive search tool.
- Documentation - complete project documentation is produced and maintained in real time.
- Roles based security and Active Directory integration - roles based access control is inherent to every feature of Talend MDM, from the integration jobs to the attribute definitions of the model, to the automatically generated create, read, update and delete services.
Organizations depend on immense amounts of transactional data to run their businesses and both the dependence and the amount of data increase every year. Often, data is dispersed across disparate sources in heterogeneous formats and with no process to maintain its accuracy and viability. Even if a common definition is found, duplicates and inconsistencies lead to inaccurate results, erroneous analytics or conflicting policies. Compounding the issue, it is difficult to agree upon consistent data across sources and then make it available throughout an organization.
Making sense of the differences between systems and systematically improving quality streamlines processes, improves analytics and provides a solid baseline of data so that agreement across resources can be established. Master Data Management solutions provide the capabilities to address the data issues; however, until now the solutions have required a complex and involved implementation, huge budget allocations and ultimately have been restrictive to certain types of domain, such as customer or product.
In order to address complex data challenges Talend MDM presents a complete solution for integrating, improving quality, master and performing stewardship on transactional reference data.
