Relevance can be measured by your competitors’ Google campaigns…

I tried searching for the keyword talend in Google. Natural search results were expected, with Talend’s Web site occupying the first positions. More interesting were the sponsored links (Google’s “Adwords” - the ones that are shown on top on the colored background, and on the right-hand side of your screen).

Competitors (Oracle: 1st position, BO: 2nd position…) and partners such as JasperSoft, think they can attract qualified traffic by bidding on the talend keyword. And they probably do! In the case of partners, it’s for the best. In the case of competitors, I am not worried: they’ll come back to download Talend Open Studio after finding that Oracle’s and BO’s web site offer nothing of value: you’ve got to pay to just have a look at their software.

More interesting is the Jitterbit ad (bottom right): they offer a Talend Alternative. Well, that’s pretty cool to be the reference in open source data integration, to which other open source vendors are now measuring. I bet others will soon follow suit, measuring their success against ours. After all, when Xaware did their press launch a couple months back, they kept comparing their solution to ours - even though their solution touts a vastly different concept, but we were at that time the only real open source integration company.

It’s good to have become a reference in our space, in such a short time.

Talend is a Finalist in the SourceForge Awards! (VOTE NOW)

Thanks to a terrific community that nominated Talend Open Studio, I am proud to inform you that Talend has been nominated a finalist in the SourceForge.net Community Choice Awards, in the category “Most Likely to be the Next $1 billion Acquisition”.

This is a great recognition of the success of Talend and how we have clearly become the leader in the open source data integration market, and a model for many other players in this field.

Now we need the community more than ever. PLEASE VOTE!!! Being a finalist is a great recognition but we don’t want to stop here, we want to be the winner.

The process is simple:
Visit this URL: http://sourceforge.net/awards/cca/?group_id=181308. You will need to authenticate into your SourceForge.net account (if you are not a member already, you will be prompted to create an account - it’s a very straightforward process and of course it’s free). Then pick Talend Open Studio as your vote for the category “Most Likely to be the Next $1 billion Acquisition”. You may pick other winners for other categories if you wish, but this is optional - you can just pick “I do not wish to vote” (yeah, this is a bit of a pain… but it’s worth it!)

Don’t wait - voting is only open for a few weeks.

Thanks again to all the community for your support.

Yves

PS: kudos to SourceForge.net, a fellow founding member of the OSA, for putting together these great awards!

Talend Open Profiler, the first open source data profiling solution

top_perspective.jpgWe have just released Talend Open Profiler - the first open source data profiler.

Put simply, data profiling is the process of examining the data available in existing data sources and collecting statistics and information about this data. Data profiling - while an interesting discipline in its own right - is especially interesting when executed as part of a data quality strategy. In other words: know your data, before you attempt to fix it.

Talend has always considered data quality to be an integrant part of data integration. From day one, we have started to build some data quality and data cleansing components: deduplication, enrichment, fuzzy logic matching… Data profiling clearly takes us to the next step and allows us to introduce a data quality focused product suite. A data quality suite that can - and should - be used wherever data integration is used. But also, that can be used standalone when dealing with data quality issues - outside of the realm of data integration.

Like human viruses, poor quality data travels faster when applications are integrated. In the 19th century, epidemics would stay local. In the 21st century, the SARS infection spread worldwide in days… As information systems are no longer standalone, and all applications and databases communicate and exchange, being certain of the level of quality of your data is key. Before you send erroneous or incomplete data to corrupt other systems…

So - couple things. First, join me in congratulating the Talend data quality development team, led by Sebastiao, for a terrific product. Second, download Talend Open Profiler, test it, use it, post in the forums, report bugs or features request, and tell us what you think!

“Parallel” online communities are growing

Over the past few months, we have started to see a dramatic increase on the amount of web traffic and chatter related to Talend, on non-sanctioned Talend sites. By non-sanctioned, I certainly do not imply anything negative - just that these sites are not controlled by Talend and are mostly the work of community members getting together to discuss and exchange around their favorite data integration technology.

There are a few communities I would like to especially recognize:

  • Developpez.com, the French-language “Club des développeurs”, hosts a very active technical forum on Talend. It complements well TalendForge.org’s forum and caters to the French-speaking community.
  • Viadeo, the leading social network, now boasts a Talend Open Community. With hubs in 5 languages (English, French, German, Spanish, Italian), the Talend Open Community has over 500 members from all over the world. More networking-oriented than technical-oriented, the community is a great complement to Talend’s technical community tools.
  • Xing also hosts a German-speaking Talend Group. A bit younger than the other ones, it is however catching up quickly and has already seen some interesting exchanges.

All these communities are a great proof of Talend’s growing footprint and market presence. You are cordially invited to one of them, several of them, or even to initiate a new one in a specific region, market segment, vertical… just let us know about them so that we can recognize it, and contribute (if you want).
